Built for California.

California has the most demanding firearm laws in the country. Here's exactly how buying, owning and storing an American Gun Co. firearm works in the Golden State.

How to Buy

From counter to safe, in five steps.

Buying a firearm in California is a process — and it should be. Here's what to expect.

Step 01

Choose your firearm

Browse the lineup and pick the American Gun Co. firearm that fits your role.

Step 02

Visit a CA dealer

Use our locator to find an authorized licensed dealer near you.

Step 03

Get your FSC

If you don't already hold a valid Firearm Safety Certificate, take the test at the dealer.

Step 04

DROS & background

Your dealer submits the paperwork and the DOJ runs your background check.

Step 05

Wait 10 days & pick up

Return after the waiting period, complete the safety demo, and take it home — locked.

01Licensed dealer transfers

In California, firearm sales and transfers — including most private-party sales — must go through a licensed California firearms dealer (FFL). We do not sell or ship firearms directly to consumers.

  • Purchase in person at an authorized dealer.
  • Your dealer submits the Dealer Record of Sale (DROS) to the California DOJ.
  • Firearms we sell are shipped only to licensed dealers.

02Firearm Safety Certificate (FSC)

Most buyers need a valid Firearm Safety Certificate before taking delivery of any firearm. The FSC is a short written test on safe handling and California law, given by DOJ-certified instructors — usually right at the dealer.

  • Bring a valid California ID.
  • The certificate is valid for five years.

03Background check & 10-day wait

Every purchase is subject to a California DOJ background check and a 10-day waiting period before you can take possession. Plan ahead — your dealer will tell you exactly when your firearm can be released.

  • Proof of California residency may be required for certain purchases.
  • Handgun buyers complete a safe-handling demonstration at pickup.

04The Handgun Roster

Dealers in California can generally only sell new handguns listed on the California DOJ Roster of Certified Handguns. We will only market an American Gun Co. handgun as available for retail sale in California once it appears on the Roster.

05Magazines & capacity

California prohibits the manufacture, import and sale of magazines that hold more than 10 rounds. Every magazine we ship for California is limited to 10 rounds from the factory.

06Rifle configuration

California restricts certain semi-automatic centerfire rifle features. Our rifles are built in a California-legal configuration from the factory — no aftermarket modifications required.

  • Never add or swap parts without confirming the result is legal in California.

07Ammunition

Ammunition sales in California are regulated and are generally processed through licensed ammunition vendors. These rules have been the subject of recent litigation — ask your dealer for the requirements in effect when you buy.

08Safe storage & transport

A shield only works when it's in the right hands. California has strict storage and transport requirements, and every new firearm must be accompanied by a DOJ-approved locking device or proof of a qualifying gun safe.

  • Store firearms unloaded and locked, separate from ammunition.
  • Keep firearms inaccessible to children and prohibited persons.
  • Transport firearms unloaded in a locked container.

This page is general information, not legal advice. California firearm law changes often and is subject to ongoing litigation. Always confirm current requirements with your licensed dealer or the California Department of Justice, Bureau of Firearms (oag.ca.gov/firearms) before purchasing.
